The Fraunhofer-Group for Life Sciences is a competent partner in all areas of life science, because it is represented by six institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Each one has its own core competencies in the life sciences. Every one of the Fraunhofer-Institutes involved, the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT), for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology (IGB), for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (IME), for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM), for Process Engineering and Packaging (IVV), and for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI) does research and development at the highest level. A unique know-how, method, and equipment pool develops through interdisciplinary dialogue and the internal cooperation between the institutes coordinated by the alliance. Furthermore, the organization as a group makes it possible for our clients from big industry and small and intermediate businesses to have a comfortable, central access through its management. The group has access to the global actors of the life sciences through its international representatives in the MENA-region, China, and Japan, as well as through the Fraunhofer Center for Molecular Biotechnology (CMB) and the establishment of a biotechnology site in Chile.

The thematic foci of the Fraunhofer-Group for Life Sciences are allocated to business areas. The following overview reveals its diversity:
  • Medical Translation Research and Biomedical Technology - The Challenge of Innovative Diagnostics and Personalized Therapy

  • Regenerative Medicine -The Challenge of Controlled Self-Healing and Qualified Biobanking

  • Healthy Foods -The Challenge of Disease Prevention and High Consumer Acceptance

  • The Potential of New Biotechnology -The Challenge to Learn from Nature for Industrial Exploitation

  • Process, Chemical, and Herbicide Safety -The Challenge of Environmental and Consumer Protection

On behalf of its clients, the Fraunhofer-Group for Life Sciences develops many excellent research contributions on the cause, diagnosis, healing, and prevention of diseases. Application-oriented, comprehensive research on quality preservation of the production and transport processes of our food supports individual preventive behavior. The environment also significantly influences our health and well-being. From various perspectives, the scientists of the group contribute to the further understanding of ecological interrelations. These are incorporated in the implementation of novel, resource conserving procedures and lead to methods for their control and their new nomination.

»Research for human health and the environment« is the joint motto of the Fraunhofer-Group for Life Sciences. It connects the employees of all the institutes and is their commitment as well as their motivation.

The Fraunhofer-Group for Life Sciences is one of seven professional groups in the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, which is the largest research institute for applied research in Europe.
